Imperial Launches Old Saxon Traditional Waterstrucks

24 March 2026 - News

Bricks Born From Tradition, Engineered For Today

The waterstruck method, a revered British brickmaking technique, uses water instead of sand to release wet clay from its mould. This creates bricks with lightly textured surfaces, natural creasing, soft edges, rich colour, and a matte finish.

The Old Saxon Collection captures all of these qualities in a brick that is dimensionally consistent, structurally reliable, and fully compatible with modern building methods.

Five Unique Colours, One Unmistakable Character

The Old Saxon Collection launches with five carefully curated colourways, each reflecting a distinct regional aesthetic and traditional appearance within the UK’s rich brickmaking heritage.

Old Saxon Red

A bold, vibrant, classic red with a clean traditional aesthetic. The deep, iron-rich tone is reminiscent of the finest East Anglian and Midlands brick traditions.

Old Saxon Red Multi

A vibrant blend of reds with natural tone variations that create a rich, textured façade. The variegated palette, which ranges from terracotta to deep russet and oxblood, gives this brick a tone that defines historic masonry. Ideal for conservation-sensitive schemes and character-led residential developments.

Old Saxon Brown

A deep, earthy tone that offers a robust, grounded appearance for contemporary or rural settings. The warm, mottled browns and subtle flashing give these bricks a tactile, organic quality that sits beautifully in both rural and urban contexts.

Old Saxon Buff

A soft, muted buff with aged characteristics. Evoking the pale, creamy oatmeals of the Fens and Lincolnshire, this colourway is ideal for schemes where a lighter, more refined palette is required, from Georgian-inspired townhouses to contemporary low-rise residential.

Old Saxon Grey

A modern, flat grey that gives a sleek finish. Its distinctive cool, anthracite tones set it apart as the most contemporary option in the range. This unique colourway, combined with the waterstruck texture, adds warmth and character to design-led commercial and residential façades, making it ideal for creating a modern look with added visual interest.

All five colourways are available in a standard metric size of 65 x 215 x 102.5 mm (T2/R1 tolerance), with a pack size of 550 units.

Metric Waterstrucks for Facade Systems

This is where the Old Saxon Collection sets itself apart, not just from other waterstruck products, but from the broader UK brick market.

Until now, specifiers working on brick slip façade systems, including EWI, GRC panel systems, and mechanically fixed cladding, have faced a fundamental limitation. The majority of UK brick manufacturers do not produce waterstruck bricks in formats suitable for slip systems. The soft-mud, water-moulded production process has historically been associated with full- sized handmade bricks, leaving façade engineers with a stark choice: accept the flat, uniform texture of a wire-cut slips, or forgo the façade system altogether. The Old Saxon range removes that compromise entirely.

Imperial Bricks has engineered the Old Saxon Collection to be fully compatible with modern façade systems, enabling specifiers to achieve the organic fluid texture of a waterstruck in a range of regional colour palettes in their building design.

This is a capability that the UK market has simply not been able to offer until now. Where other manufacturers have been unable to adapt their waterstruck production to the dimensional precision required by slip systems, Imperial Bricks delivers a product that is both authentically waterstruck and technically fit for purpose in the most demanding modern façade applications.

At our purpose-built brick slip cutting facility in Shropshire, we are can cut and profile bricks in the Old Saxon Collection to suit all façade systems.

Why This Matters

The implications for design and specification are significant:

  • Conservation and Heritage Schemes with Modern Construction Methods

Many heritage-sensitive projects, particularly those involving the cladding of existing structures or new-build infill in conservation areas, require a brick that reads as genuinely traditional but must be applied via a modern façade system. The Old Saxon Collection makes this possible for the first time at scale.

  • Residential and Mixed-Use Developments

Housebuilders and developers working in areas where local planning policy requires traditional brick character can now specify a waterstruck finish on EWI systems, reducing thermal bridging and improving energy performance without sacrificing the visual quality demanded by planners and conservation officers.

  • Commercial and Civic Architecture

For architects seeking the warmth and tactility of a handmade brick on large-scale commercial façades, the Old Saxon range offers a palette and texture that elevates the finished building far beyond what standard slip bricks can achieve.

  • Retrofit and Over-Cladding

As the UK’s existing building stock undergoes large-scale energy retrofit, the demand for EWI-compatible facing materials that respect the character of existing streetscapes is growing rapidly. The Old Saxon range is ideally positioned to meet this demand.

The launch of the Old Saxon Collection signals a new level of possibility for façade design in the UK. By uniting the authentic texture and tonal richness of true waterstruck brick with the dimensional precision required for modern metric construction and slip systems, Imperial Bricks has removed the long‑standing compromise between character and performance.

For architects, Old Saxon offers the freedom to specify a genuinely tactile, heritage-inspired finish across EWI, GRC and mechanically fixed façades without sacrificing technical compliance. For developers, it delivers planning-friendly aesthetics combined with build efficiency and system compatibility. And for self- builders, it provides the opportunity to achieve a distinctive, handcrafted look, whether on a contemporary home or a traditionally inspired project, with the reassurance of consistent sizing and modern testing data.
